An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is specifically educated in breastfeeding management and counseling to work with families to prevent and solve breastfeeding/chest feeding problems. To become certified, an IBCLC must pass an International Board Exam covering subjects including counseling, anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, nutrition, biochemistry, immunology, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology of both the lactating parent and baby, as well as infant/child growth and development. IBCLCs must recertify every five years to insure they keep their knowledge and skills up to date.
